City of Gilbert

City of Gilbert

Gilbert, located in Central Arizona, is hardly small, boasting a population of 107,000 and growing. Travel along the State Highway 60, southeast of Phoenix and you'll soon reach Gilbert. Gilbert is between the city of Chandler to the west and Mesa to the northeast.
William M. Gilbert was a homesteader who came to the area in 1904. The Arizona Eastern Railway wanted to set up a line between Phoenix and Florence. They needed donations of land and William Gilbert donated his land so that they could have a rail siding on his property. It proved a good idea, because a rail siding meant a section of railway on his property. Trains could be pulled off this extra track for maintenance work or for loading, without blocking the main railway tracks. For William Gilbert it also meant that he didn't have to travel far to sell his crops and a town began to grow at this rail siding. The building of the Roosevelt Dam helped the area develop further because it helped the farmers in the area. What is now a prime area for Phoenix real estate was once dubbed the "Hay Capital of the World".
In 1920, the town became incorporated. At that time there was a population of 500 people and agriculture played an important role. That hasn't changed. Today, this prime real estate region still has many houses that are situated on mini-ranches. Cotton, grain, alfalfa, vegetables and citrus are still grown. Livestock, too, is still part of the Gilbert landscape.
The warm south western climate boasts summer temperatures with highs of 110 degrees and winter low temperatures of 45 degrees. What's more, metropolitan Phoenix and the Tonto National forest are both nearby, making Gilbert a sort of best of both worlds locale.
What sort of amenities can residents of this area look forward to? If you enjoy a good golf game, you may think you've gone to golf heaven. There are four golf courses in Gilbert. Kokopelli Golf Resorts and Trilogy Golf Club are two of the pay to play courses. In all directions, within a 15-minute drive, you'll have a choice of over 25 courses! Not a golfer? There are plenty more amenities on offer. Parks and horse-riding trails are all part of the setting. Hiking and fishing is available in the area. In town, you'll see walkers and horseback riders getting their morning exercise.
