City of Surprise
Founded in 1929, Surprise is being transformed from a small farming community to an explosively growing city and bedroom community. The population has jumped from 10,700 in 1995 to over 35,000. City officials are projecting a population of 65,000 within the next ten years.
One big reason for the growth is Sun City Grand, a Del Webb active adult community. Their plans call for 9,500 homes with 17,000 residents spread over 4,000 acres west of Grand Avenue. Other Surprise developments also include other age-restricted communities and tons of brand new family neighborhoods.
Surprise is also experiencing growth in the business, retail and service sectors. It has annexed land north of the White Tank Mountains to link up with Buckeye. The Sun Cities Lifelong Learning Center is located within Surprise. The Dysart Unified School District serves the entire city.
