Glendale is Arizona's fourth largest city and the financial and business hub of the rapidly growing Northwest Valley. It's a friendly city with a small-town feeling where the charm and character of its past are as important as the growth and progress in its future. This vibrant community boasts many amenities necessary for a quality lifestyle including scenic mountain views, desert vistas, wide-open spaces, golf courses, and lakes. From a residential perspective, Glendale features beautiful master-planned communities, luxury executive homes, older residences in quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods, and affordable starter housing. One of the fastest-growing cities in the state and the 100th largest city in the United States, Glendale's population of 230,000 has increased 47% since 1990. The majority of Glendale's population is young, college-educated, married with children and earning an average of more than $53,000 annually. Progressive corporations such as Honeywell Avionics, Honeywell Space Satellite Systems, Parker Hannifin, Conair, Bechtel and Corning-Gilbert are located there.
Old Towne Glendale and Historic Catlin Court Shops District are home to more than 90 antique stores, specialty shops and eateries - all nestled around Historic Murphy Park, the town square. Recent additions include the Bead Museum and the American Museum of Nursing. Gaslit street lamps, brick walkways, tree-lined streets, and quaint specialty shops add charm to downtown's turn-of-the-century atmosphere. With the largest concentration of antique stores in a walk able area, Glendale has earned the reputation of Arizona's Antique Capital. It was rated one of the top ten antique destinations in the country by USA Today.
Glendale's recreational opportunities abound with 56 parks containing 1,682 acres, including 1,185-acre Thunderbird Regional Mountain Park. There's a major event almost every month and every weekend from October to May, you can shop downtown at the Market at Murphy Park. Popular attractions include Glendale Glitters, Glendale's Glitter & Glow, Glendale Chocolate Affaire, WorldPort and the Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival. Starting in 2003-2004, the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes will begin play in a new arena in Glendale. The new, multipurpose stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals and the Fiesta Bowl broke ground in 2003.
Restaurant and shopping opportunities abound not only downtown, but also on Bell Road, one of the hottest retail areas in the Valley. Arrowhead Towne Center, a 1.3 million-square foot super regional mall, anchors this Mecca retail corridor which has more than 700 businesses and provides entertainment, shopping and dining for a variety of tastes.
Glendale's growth and vision for the future are reflected in the progressive business development and public and private partnerships. Glendale's new civic center was completed in November 1999. Luke Air Force Base, the largest jet fighter training base in the world, is located in west Glendale and serves as its largest employer with more than 7,000 employees. Sky Harbor International Airport is 13 miles from downtown.
Arrowhead Community Hospital and Medical Center and thunderbird Samaritan Medical Center are state-of-the-art facilities. Glendale is home to four institutions of higher learning including Thunderbird American Graduate School of International Management, Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Arizona State University West, and Glendale Community College. All the school districts feature standardized test scores consistently higher than the national average.
