City of Tempe
The City of Tempe has a historic preservation program dedicated to maintaining the structures built in the 1800s, and while the area has undergone much redevelopment, great care has been taken to preserve the ambience in historic areas even as new structures are put up in the name of progress.
Tempe real estate buyers will be pleased to know that Tempe has a family environment. Further, forty-seven percent of Tempe's more than sixty thousand houses are single-family homes. That family environment is complemented greatly by the excellent weather. There are around three hundred days of sunshine a year in Tempe, making swimming pools popular as well as outdoor sports. The Tempe sporting community includes the professional Arizona Cardinals, plus collegiate action such as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl Football classic, and Arizona State University's regular sports season. If you're buying Phoenix real estate, you won't be able to resist Tempe's sporting siren call.
The Tempe school system teaches more than thirteen thousand pre-high school students a year; Tempe schools have been recognized by the Blue Ribbon program for academic excellence. The same number of high school students (around thirteen thousand) is served by eight institutions including an academy for gifted students.
Arizona State University is the higher education center of Tempe, taking up 700 Tempe acres and serving more than forty-seven thousand students from more than one hundred fifty countries. The Tempe campus offers more that eighty Bachelor's degree programs, over ninety Masters programs and nearly fifty Doctoral programs.
Once you're here, you'll find yourself exploring the Arizona highways and byways. When you're wandering, don't pass up the chance to see downtown Tempe-especially Mill Avenue. This is a cultural center for Tempe-on any given day you can see live theatre, comedy, dance and much more. Tempe also has a colorful music scene, and award winning local productions. There are more than twenty free museums and galleries to be found, including the Arizona State University Museum.
Looking for cultural activities beyond Tempe? Visitors often make the trek to Tempe to enjoy both the Spring and Fall Festivals of the Arts, which attracts nearly 250,000 people each! These are also the second largest juried art shows in America, making Tempe a center for culture and its residents and visitors patrons of the arts just by showing up! Speaking of culture, the Tempe Symphony Orchestra, established in 1973, offers four free annual shows at McClintock High School.
